How to Test Your Pressure Relief Valve (Without Blowing Up Your House)
Testing a pressure relief valve is easier than you might think, but it does require a little attention to safety. First things first: be sure to wear gloves and safety goggles because the water can be extremely hot – and you don’t want to burn yourself. Here’s how you can test the valve in a few simple steps:
Gather Your Gear: Get a small container that can hold about half a gallon of water. Also, make sure you’ve got your gloves and goggles on. Safety first!
Remove the Drain Tube: Unscrew or remove the drain tube from the valve. This is where the water will flow out when the valve is tested.
Place Your Container: Position the water container directly underneath the valve outlet (which should be facing down).
Test the Valve: Open the valve slightly – only about 60 degrees from its original position. Don’t open it all the way, or you’ll get a rush of scalding water pouring out!
Check for Water Flow: When you open the valve, water should start flowing out rapidly, under pressure, and you’ll hear a hissing noise. That means your pressure relief valve is working like a charm.

If no water comes out, it’s time for a replacement. A valve that doesn’t release water properly is broken and could pose a serious risk.
